administrator print applications and photo copy them, I sat in on 3 different

through text messaging. I was then given a video camera to test. This is one
of the video cameras that will be used to film the production on Friday and

3. Describe the work activities you participated in during the day.
Today I started with painting props that hadn’t been finish painting yet. Then
the lighting designer was rigging photo frames, which are one of the main props
throughout the production. They had to be hung down on strings, which could
be pulled up so they can’t be seen then let down at the appropriate times
throughout the play. All the lights were already installed other than 3 spotlights
which I watched being installed and tested. 2 of the light bulbs where blown so
the lighting designer had to change them. Microphones were attached the back
of the photo frame and tapped with electrical tape. I helped the director Tape
them and got to stand behind the frames on stools of different heights and go
through ‘Testing 1, 2, 3’ many times to make sure all the cast were able to be
heard through the microphone. After that I was assigned Assistant Stage Manager
for the production of Click, which is ATYP’s production over Friday night, Saturday
Matinee and Saturday Night. I will be operating all the visual systems throughout
the show. So the last task I had to do was to make sure all the videos worked through
the projector and through the big photo frame on the back wall of the performance
area. Then the cast came in and did a tech run of the show with no stops, I couldn’t
do the visual system throughout this tech run because they hadn’t figured out the
cues. So I sat next to the director and he told me to go and fix different people or
props etc throughout the run.

skill. (What did you do/achieve?)
Employability skills I developed today included Communication, Teamwork and
Problem Solving. My Communication skills developed, as I had to interact with
not only the employees but also the cast. Teamwork Skills was developed with
rigging the photo frames, testing microphones, and testing the lights. I also got
to see the teamwork of all the employees and how they interact when on the job.
My Problem Solving Skills were put to the test when the projector wouldn’t work
because the PC Laptop was to slow, so I had to change the computer and fix the
settings in order for the projector to mirror display the laptop on the screen.
6. Describe any difficulties/ new issues that have challenged you in your
day at work placement and what you learnt in those situations. What skills
did you develop?
Only one difficulty I was faced today and it was when the projector wouldn’t work
because the PC Laptop was to slow. I had to change the computer and fix the settings
in order for the projector to mirror display the laptop on the screen.
7. Describe what you enjoyed about work today.
I enjoyed watching the lighting designer rig the props, install the lights and the
stage manager control the sound desk throughout the tech run. I also enjoyed
being in the backstage environment and doing tasks that I have practiced in class
but im now doing them in real life (eg vision systems).
8. Describe what you have to follow up for tomorrow at work.
Tomorrow I will be testing the videos again making sure they work through the
projector and onto the screen. Helping out the stage manager with another
performance for the workshop students. Then the final tech run with all the

worked for the day: Friday 7th October, 11:30pm-9pm, 9.5 hours
2. Self-Assessment: Rate yourself on the following standards. (Scale: 1=

3. Describe the work activities you participated in during the day.
Today started with running tech runs with the 4 workshop groups so the stage
manager could work out lighting that suits the performance and the children could
practice in the space. Then they performed in front of their families, friends etc.
After that I had to learn my cues for when to play the new videos. They printed
me a script and I penciled in the cues. Then the cast of ‘Click’ came in and the
stage manager and the lighting technician plotted the cues for the lighting whilst
doing a tech run and I was operating and practicing the videos at the given times.
As soon as the tech run was over we had around 10 minutes until the audience
was arriving. After the show I helped pack up the specific equipment and fixed a
few cues on my script.

- Sound Desk
- Props
5. List the Employability Skills you developed during work activities.
Explain the context of the activity and the corresponding employability
skill. (What did you do/achieve?)
One Employability skill I developed today was Problem Solving. My Problem
Solving Skills were put to the test when the videos sometimes didn’t start or the
music was playing but the picture didn’t come up. I had to overcome that problem
and either start it again or skip it.
6. Describe any difficulties/ new issues that have challenged you in
your day at work placement and what you learnt in those situations.
What skills did you develop?
One Difficulty was when videos sometimes didn’t start or the music was playing
but the picture didn’t come up. I developed my problem solving skills as i had to
try and fix the videos as soon as possible or if it was too late just to skip the video
and continue to the next one.
7. Describe what you enjoyed about work today.
I enjoyed watching the workshop performances as I had only seen the beginnings
of them on Wednesday and today I got to see the final product. Also I enjoyed
being backstage throughout a show and being able to experience the pressure
of the stage manager’s position.
8. Describe what you have to follow up for tomorrow at work.
Tomorrow when I arrive we will be setting up ready to perform the Saturday
Matinee show. Between the Matinee Show and the night show the cast maybe
practicing specific scenes etc. Then I will help bump out and then all my out side
of schoolwork experience will be done.

Today when i arrived i turned on the projector and tested all the videos once
again as i didn’t want any videos not to work. Then the cast arrived and they
rehearsed anything they were unsure about or any sections they wanted to run
through with lights and the videos. Then it was time to get ready for the 2nd show.
After the show we had a 2 hour break for dinner so the cast and i went and had
dinner together. When we returned the cast practiced there lines then it was time
for the final show. After the show the first thing we did was turn the projector off
so it had time to cool down, then we took down the frames and rearranged some
